A recent pay offer from the BBC was rejected by a union because it was considered to be well below inflation, effectively constituting a real-terms pay cut.

This offer emerged after several months of negotiations involving multiple unions.

The proposal included a 1% salary increase for staff, along with a £500 underpin for employees in specific bands, contingent on meeting criteria like training and appraisals.

Existing non-consolidated allowance recipients would receive the highest value among the 1% award, the £500 underpin, or their 2025 non-consolidated payment.

Any pay increase exceeding the maximum of the new pay range would be issued as a new non-consolidated allowance for 2026.

Furthermore, night payments, Christmas and Boxing Day payments, and the London/Channel Islands weighting allowance would see a 1% rise, and all job pay ranges would increase by at least 1%.

The rejecting union stated the offer did not acknowledge the stress on staff who are expected to do more with fewer resources amidst rising job insecurity.

The union intends to pursue independent conciliation through ACAS in the hope of achieving a better offer for its members.

Members of a union reached an agreement on a revised rota proposal with the BBC on May 22nd, bringing an end to their dispute.

Scheduled strikes for May 24th and May 25th have been cancelled, and members will stop all action short of a strike.

The ongoing industrial action involved strike action by members on Newshour and The World Tonight beginning on May 18th, followed by working to rule.

The compromise reached includes a reduction in the length of some shifts and a limitation on added shifts, reduced from an original proposal of 26 to 13.

Importantly, there will be no alterations made to the working patterns for staff employed on The World Tonight.

Members of the National Union of Journalists working on BBC's Newshour and The World Tonight initiated strike action due to a dispute over proposed changes to work rotas.

The management proposed shifts that are shorter but more frequent, amounting to an extra 26 office days annually without additional compensation.

Union members overwhelmingly supported the action after constructive discussions failed to resolve the conflict, despite offering a significant compromise.

There is concern that the changes will increase workloads for journalists, potentially leading to burnout.

The strike coincided with the first official day of the new BBC Director General.

Action short of a strike will also be implemented by members following the initial walkout.

Support and messages of solidarity were received for the striking BBC workers from various union branches and other affiliated groups.

These messages urged management to engage fairly and recognize the value of the staff being asked to cover extra work without extra pay.
