Two weeks of strike action have concluded in Lincoln, where over 80 staff members face redundancy risk due to a planned Service Centre closure in May 2026.
Most affected employees are low-paid AOs with limited prospects for internal or external redeployment.
The strike action has seen strong support from various groups, including Jobcentre staff, local authority workers, and other trade union activists.
Discussions with the relevant department have occurred, where concerns regarding redeployment difficulties were raised.
However, the department maintains its decision regarding the closure of the Lincoln Service Centre or finding alternative local accommodation is final.
Information revealed through a Freedom of Information request suggested that the cost of voluntary redundancy payments could equal over 16 years of the facility's rent.
This financial comparison challenges the department's stated rationale for office closures being solely based on cost savings.
There are 95 members of staff who are currently deemed unassigned by the DWP and face the real prospect of redundancy when the office closes in May 2026. Efforts by the DWP to redeploy staff have so far been relatively unsuccessful with fewer than 30 staff being redeployed within the department or found jobs in other government departments. The vast majority of members impacted by this decision are low-paid AO staff and are out of mobility for most jobs in the DWP.
PCS DWP members in Lincoln have voted overwhelmingly to strike in support of keeping their office open. By voting for strike action – 86% in favour on a 61% turnout - members have been absolutely clear with the DWP that they are not prepared to accept the closure of their office without a fight. The closure of DWP Lincoln Service Centre will inevitably lead to large numbers of staff being made redundant. This will have a serious impact on their community and a devastating effect on the individuals affected by this heartless decision. It will also leave the DWP with an even greater deficit of experienced staff to deliver critical government services to some of the most vulnerable people in society.
Unite members working for Defence Equipment & Support Deca at Sealand in Flintshire and Stafford have voted to strike over an imposed two per cent pay award for 2022. Defence Equipment & Support Deca, is wholly owned by the MOD. The workforce is highly skilled and provide a vital role in maintaining military, avionic and electronic equipment.
In contrast to some other branches of the Civil Service, Deca lacks any form of pay progression, resulting in a consistent decrease in real terms income for workers year after year.
- PCS members in Liverpool, Doncaster, Stockport and Bolton have already taken part in well-supported targeted action
- PCS is now asking members at 13 jobcentres in Liverpool and Glasgow to take further strike action for five days on 2, 3, 4, 5 AND 6 MAY 2023
- This period includes Saturday 6 May, which is Coronation Day, but when all jobcentres are scheduled to be open as normal, with no concession to the national occasion
- The PCS national strike action began on December last year and has so far involved members in six offices taking strike action.
- The strike action in the first phase has been targeted at areas that would have a significant impact on employers. These include redundancy and job security.
- The next phase of the strike action, which will take place from 1-3 March, involves members in Stockport, Bolton, Liverpool, and Liverpool Innovation Park.
