Latest Tate Galleries Industrial Action Updates (2)

Following a meeting on December 4th, the employer agreed to develop proposals to address the ongoing dispute.

The employer has stated an inability to offer a pay increase beyond the already agreed 3% award for 2025/26, citing their financial situation.

The organization's 2024/26 accounts indicated a £5 million deficit.

Reductions in revenue have been attributed to decreased grant-in-aid funding, the impact of Covid-19, and Brexit.

Concerns persist regarding the financial management practices at the galleries.

The employer is scheduled to present proposals regarding improved terms and conditions by January 9, 2026.

A subsequent meeting between the parties is set for January 12th.

While improvements to terms and conditions are supported, there remains a drive for an inflation-proof pay increase, including a restorative element, and further industrial action may be considered if the proposals are rejected.

A dispute has arisen because the Tate has not offered an above-inflation pay increase for two consecutive years, resulting in a real-terms pay cut for workers where a large majority voted in favor of strike action following a high turnout ballot.

The planned industrial action involves members across Tate Britain, Tate Liverpool, Tate Modern, Tate St Ives, and Tate Stores, with pickets specifically taking place at three sites.

The first day of striking is timed to coincide with the autumn budget to highlight the negative impact of reduced grant-in-aid funding on cultural institutions.

The action is anticipated to cause disruptions, including affecting visitor access to Tate Modern and the opening of a new exhibition at Tate Britain, along with delays at Tate St Ives.

Tate Liverpool exhibitions at RIBA North will also temporarily close during specific dates due to the action.

The current pay offer of only 3% leaves employees facing a real-terms pay reduction amid rising costs, with a survey indicating over 70% of respondents cannot meet basic living expenses on their current salary.

Following the ballot result, meetings have occurred between the parties in an effort to resolve the ongoing disagreement ahead of potential further action in 2026.

There are organized picket schedules detailed for Tate Britain, Tate Modern, and Tate Liverpool outside RIBA North, advising on times and locations for support.
