The workers were in dispute over significant pay disparities between themselves and colleagues on the London Underground performing the same role. Following negotiations with Transport for London, an improved offer was put forward that helped to substantially close the pay disparity, with some London Trams engineering grades seeing an uplift of up to 20 per cent. The deal, which was accepted in a ballot by the engineers, also resolved long running contractual and holiday pay issues.
TfL has admitted five Tramlink engineering roles have pay disparities and claims that other roles either do not have disparities or that they are too negligible to be considered. While Unite did not agree, the union was willing to continue talks if TfL was transparent about the criteria it was using to arrive at its conclusions, which has not happened. Furthermore, TfL reneged on the initial conditions of the talks, which was that if pay disparities were identified a plan would be put in place to bring the impacted roles up to London Underground levels of pay. TfL is refusing to do this for the five roles it has identified.
Around 60 tram, stores and infrastructure engineers are angry that their colleagues on the London Underground, who require the same qualifications and perform the same roles, are paid up to £10,000 more a year.
Negotiations have been ongoing with Transport for London (TfL) for over five years because the workers are on office worker contracts despite their technical roles. This has negatively impacted their pay and prevented the workers from collectively negotiating pay as a distinct bargaining group. TfL agreed last year to change the workers contracts but has thus far failed to implement this commitment
