More than 3,000 GMB members, including classroom assistants, drivers, bus escorts, catering staff, cleaning staff, administrative, building supervisors have taken several days of industrial action in a dispute over pay and grading. But today [Wednesday] a majority of 83 per cent of GMB Members voted to accept the new pay and grading proposal from the northern Ireland Executive. The Executive has now committed a financial package to implement Stage one of the proposal GMB will now wait for the results of other unions' ballots.
Strike action involving non-teaching staff in Northern Ireland on Monday has been suspended. Nipsa and GMB said their planned action on Tuesday will also no longer go ahead. A third union, Unite, has yet to cancel its strike on Tuesday pending negotiations. Workers in the three unions have been taking action over pay and grading. Those set to strike included bus drivers, classroom assistants and canteen staff.
Classroom assistants, drivers, bus escorts, catering staff, cleaning staff, administrative, building supervisors and technicians are set to take four days of industrial action on 20 and 21 May and 3 and 4 June 2024.
"They have simply had enough; they’ve yet to be acknowledged for their job roles despite the Education Authority agreeing the business case for the pay and grading review dating back to 2018."
