Latest Office for National Statistics Industrial Action Updates (2)
Members of Prospect's HQ section have decisively voted to accept the negotiated office attendance agreement with the Office for National Statistics (ONS), following a formal ballot.
The ballot saw a 66% turnout, with 91% of the votes cast in favour of accepting the offer.
Consequently, the dispute has concluded, and the mandate for industrial action has been withdrawn.
The decision reflects the strength of the prior mandate which resulted in significant movement from the employer.
The negotiated position replaces individual attendance targets with a purpose-led framework.
The next phase will concentrate on implementation, monitoring the application of the agreement, and retaining the option to reopen the dispute if the agreement is not reasonably applied.
Members have been directed to cease all industrial action immediately.
Members of Prospect at the Office for National Statistics (ONS) have voted to extend industrial action that falls short of a full strike.
This action relates to a dispute concerning the department's return-to-office policy, which mandates staff attend the workplace at least 40% of the time.
The policy was put in place without significant consultation and disregards previously successful flexible and hybrid working models.
The union is advocating for an attendance approach based on evidence and purpose rather than arbitrary quotas.
Concerns remain that the uniform requirement is unjustified and unfairly impacts staff with disabilities, care duties, or long travel times.
This aligns with criticisms regarding the ONS's engagement culture noted in previous reviews and committee sessions.
Although enforcement was previously lax, there is now a concentrated effort to enforce the required attendance levels.
Discussions are continuing, with hope that a shift in senior leadership will facilitate a resolution to the situation.
