Latest Aberdeen University Industrial Action Updates (2)

Eight days of strike action are set to commence after management declined an offer that had been put forward by the university's UCU branch.

The rejected proposal involved management refraining from putting any staff at risk of redundancy for a six-month period, instead pursuing savings through voluntary measures like severance schemes and non-staff budget reductions.

In exchange for this job security guarantee, the UCU branch was prepared to halt the eight planned strike days scheduled from April into May and commit to no further industrial action for six months.

University senior management communicated their rejection of this offer, meaning the planned strikes will proceed.

The union faction stated that rejecting the proposal jeopardizes staff livelihoods and the student experience.

The union had been awaiting a response to its proposal for an additional week due to the Principal's absence overseas.

Union representatives maintained their consistent readiness to engage constructively to resolve the ongoing disagreement.

The union plans to contest the current strategies through all available methods to defend its membership, protect jobs, and maintain the quality of the student experience.

Members of the University and College Union in Scotland at the University of Aberdeen are scheduled to commence four days of strike action starting March 12th over concerns regarding job reductions and potential forced redundancies.

The industrial action is a consequence of management's proposals for job cuts and their unwillingness to eliminate the possibility of compulsory redundancies, even after numerous staff opted for voluntary severance or retirement this year.

Although some advancement has been achieved during discussions aimed at resolving the issue, the possibility of staff being made redundant persists.

A prior ballot reflected strong dissatisfaction with the management's plans, as 83% of voters supported the strike on a 60% turnout.

In addition to the walkouts, union members are also participating in actions short of a strike, which include adhering strictly to contract terms and declining voluntary responsibilities.

The union expressed an ongoing willingness to negotiate a resolution to the conflict, emphasizing the necessity for management to also be prepared to find a solution to prevent the planned strikes.
