Latest London Metropolitan University Industrial Action Updates (1)
Staff are scheduled to take strike action across three consecutive weeks in April, with specific days allocated for the walkouts.
If the disagreement is not resolved, staff will also implement work-to-rule conditions starting from Monday, April 6th, for a potential six-month duration.
This industrial action followed a ballot where 90% of voting members supported the measure, exceeding the required 50% turnout threshold.
The core disagreement centers on plans to reorganize all academic schools, which includes the proposed deletion of 295 positions and potential compulsory redundancies affecting up to 120 staff members by the end of July.
The proposed job reductions are mainly targeting academic staff, with projections indicating that more than one-fifth of this group would be lost under the current plans.
Concerns have been raised that the extent of the threatened job losses jeopardizes educational offerings, doctoral research, equality results, and the university's sustained operation.
Specific subjects such as sociology and fine art may become unviable, and programs like creative writing and theatre and performing arts face a high risk of closure.
A halt to the current reduction plans is being requested, along with the commencement of genuine discussions focused on safeguarding employment and student services.
