University of Birmingham (UCU) Strike Calendar

University of Birmingham staff are in dispute over plans to make five translation and interpreting staff redundant, all from migrant or minority ethnic backgrounds.

The university announced plans in May to axe postgraduate translation and interpreting programmes and subsequently brought forward its decision timetable. UCU reported that this is the sixth round of redundancies at the institution since July 2025.

The union is demanding an end to compulsory redundancies, the release of equality impact assessments, and meetings to consider alternative proposals. Union members are scheduled to meet to decide whether to conduct a ballot for industrial action.
