Latest University of Dundee Industrial Action Updates (2)
UCU members at the University of Dundee have started a five-week strike in an ongoing dispute over cuts and compulsory redundancies. Staff will strike each weekday from late September to late October, alongside action short of a strike such as refusing voluntary duties and potential marking boycotts. The industrial action ballot previously passed with 79% support for strikes.
The dispute began in November 2024 following an announced £30 million deficit. Over 800 jobs have since been lost, with the university governing body recently voting to cut a further 154 posts despite receiving Scottish Government funding and voluntary severance applications. Strike action is also planned or taking place at other Scottish higher education institutions amid wider sector funding challenges.
Members of the University and College Union Scotland at the University of Dundee commenced strike action due to an ongoing dispute concerning job cuts and management's refusal to rule out compulsory redundancies.
This strike represents the 26th day of industrial action since a significant deficit was announced fifteen months prior.
Staff remain uncertain about the university's recovery plans, despite a previous intervention by the Scottish Funding Council that temporarily halted a plan to cut over 600 positions.
The most recent proposal involved 690 staff separations, combining voluntary severance with compulsory redundancy options.
In addition to striking, union representatives provided evidence to a Scottish Parliament committee about the dispute, with demonstrations planned afterward.
The union insists that any plan including compulsory redundancies is unacceptable, especially following the announcement of additional government funding for the university.
A central demand is for university leadership to guarantee no compulsory redundancies to bring stability to the institution.
The prolonged dispute highlights ongoing staff and student calls for certainty regarding jobs and the university's future direction, beyond staff reduction strategies.
