Unite has furiously reacted to the announcement by bus manufacturer Alexander Dennis to axe 115 highly-skilled green manufacturing jobs at its Falkirk and Larbert sites. Alexander Dennis, in a meeting with the workforce this morning, said it would axe the jobs with the remainder being retained to support bus chassis building in Scotland.
Last week, the Scottish government announced the results of the £45 million Scottish Zero Emission Bus Challenge Fund (ScotZEB3). The round confirmed that 334 zero emission vehicles were to be built in total with Alexander Dennis awarded 123 buses (36.8 per cent), whereas just under half of all orders - 166 buses – were awarded to Chinese company Yutong. The scheme was critical to the short-term sustainability of Alexander Dennis’ sites in Scotland after the company, in June 2025, announced plans to close its Scottish facilities moving all manufacturing operations into a single site in Scarborough putting 400 jobs at risk.
In December 2023 Alexander Dennis offered a penny-pinching additional 0.5 per cent on its original four per cent wage offer (4.5 per cent), and four per cent for 2024. The pay offer was emphatically rejected by the workforce.
Unite the union can confirm today (Monday 20 November) that its members based at Alexander Dennis Limited (ADL) in Camelon, Falkirk, are set to take strike action in a dispute over pay. The strength of feeling at the factory was demonstrated by Unite members recording a 81.3 per cent yes vote on a 70 per cent turnout. Unite represents around 400 coach builders and spray painters at the factory.
The announcement follows the rejection of a four per pay offer by Unite’s members. In October 2022, Unite members voted to accept a 7.7 per cent pay offer following several rounds of industrial action at ADL after the company also originally offered only four per cent.
