The University and College Union (UCU) has today welcomed the University of Liverpool's decision to cancel plans to force staff onto campus three days a week as part of controversial hybrid working proposals. Management had tried to mandate professional services staff onto campus for 60% of their working time. UCU and Unite successfully negotiated new terms with the university, including improved safety and equality protections, meaning staff now only have to spend 40% of their time on campus unless they choose more.

Management wanted staff to be on campus for 60 per cent of working time, despite this having negative impacts on employees' work-life balance, personal wellbeing, family friendly working and the principle of flexibility that hybrid working arrangements were initially intended to support. Meanwhile, office space had been repurposed meaning some staff were working in areas that were not actually fit for purpose. However, Unite and sister union UCU have now negotiated new terms with the University of Liverpool. Crucially, employees who work in a hybrid way will not be forced to work more than 40 per cent of their time on campus unless they chose to - the minimum expected after the pandemic.

At present, the workers, members of Unite, are also taking action short of a strike such as by refusing to work overtime. This is set to impact graduation ceremonies taking place from today to Friday (18 July) by causing administrative delays. The dispute began when Liverpool University management decided to impose an increase to hybrid working currently set at 40 per cent on-campus working, by expecting staff to come in for 60 per cent of their working week without any negotiations with Unite or its sister unions.

Hundreds of Unite members who are long-standing employees at the University of Liverpool will go on strike this week over proposed changes to their hybrid working patterns. It comes as Liverpool University management decided to impose an extra day to the hybrid working option currently set at 40 per cent on-campus working, expecting staff to come in for 60 per cent of their working week without any negotiations with unions.
