Cambridge Stagecoach workers will stage further strike action later this month and into February, Unite, the UK’s leading union, said today. The 200 drivers and engineers are demanding a pay increase that reflects the difficulties and stresses of the job and the high cost of living in Cambridge, one of the most expensive cities in the UK. While Cambridge drivers are paid just £16.22 hour, drivers in Manchester are paid £18 an hour and Liverpool drivers are on £17.43. Stagecoach made operating profits of £97.3 million in the year to April 2024 on sales of £1.6 billion.

The workers have rejected two inadequate pay offers from Stagecoach and are demanding a pay increase that reflects the extremely difficult demands of the job and the rising cost of living. They are also clear that any offer must not include reductions in their terms and conditions, such as overtime rates, that would see the company take with one hand and give with the other.
Cambridge is bracing for Christmas bus chaos as 200 Stagecoach workers strike over a reduction in overtime rates, Unite, the UK’s leading union, said today. The workers have rejected a pay deal that will see their overtime rates fall by 12 per cent between Monday and Friday and by 20 per cent on weekends and bank holidays.
